A bill for an act
relating to natural resources; directing Department of Natural Resources to enter
into a cooperative wild rice management plan for Big Rice Lake.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin BIG RICE LAKE COOPERATIVE WILD RICE MANAGEMENT
PILOT PROJECT.

new text begin (a) By July 1, 2009, the commissioner of natural resources must enter into a ten-year
cooperative management plan with the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa for the protection
and enhancement of the natural wild rice ecosystem in Big Rice Lake, Township 60 North,
Range 17 West, and within the boundaries of the 1854 Treaty Area.

new text begin (b) Notwithstanding any other law, the cooperative management plan must include a
process for establishing the harvest season and regulations necessary to prevent damage
to wild rice stands.
