  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to taxation; appropriating a portion of the 
  1.3             proceeds of the occupation tax to the natural 
  1.4             resources research institute at the University of 
  1.5             Minnesota; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.6             Statutes, chapter 298. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [298.013] [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.9      There is annually appropriated from the proceeds of the 
  1.10  occupation tax imposed on taconite concentrates and iron ore 
  1.11  under section 298.01, to the natural resources research 
  1.12  institute, Duluth and Coleraine facilities of the University of 
  1.13  Minnesota, an amount equal to $1,000,000, less the amount 
  1.14  allocated to the institute under section 137.022, subdivision 4, 
  1.15  for the fiscal year of the appropriation.  The money allocated 
  1.16  under section 137.022, subdivision 4, and appropriated under 
  1.17  this section must be used for the following purposes: 
  1.18     (1) for advanced technology research and development at the 
  1.19  Coleraine research laboratory of the natural resources research 
  1.20  institute; 
  1.21     (2) for advanced geological studies of ferrous and 
  1.22  nonferrous minerals on the Iron Range; and 
  1.23     (3) for research at the laboratory at the Vermillion 
  1.24  community college in Ely, Minnesota. 
  1.25     The natural resources research institute shall seek the 
  1.26  participation of private industry in these research activities. 
  2.1      Sec. 2.  [298.014] [REPORT.] 
  2.2      The natural resources research institute shall report 
  2.3   annually to the legislature on the research activities conducted 
  2.4   with the money appropriated under section 298.013 for the 
  2.5   preceding year and identify its research initiatives for the 
  2.6   succeeding three years.
