  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to commerce; prohibiting the printing of full 
  1.3             credit or debit card numbers on sales receipts; 
  1.4             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.5             chapter 325F. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [325F.983] [CREDIT CARD RECEIPTS.] 
  1.8      (a) A person that accepts credit or debit cards for the 
  1.9   transaction of business shall not print upon any receipt 
  1.10  provided to the cardholder: 
  1.11     (1) more than the last five digits of the credit or debit 
  1.12  card account number; or 
  1.13     (2) the expiration date of the credit or debit card.  
  1.14     (b) This section applies only to receipts that are 
  1.15  electronically printed and does not apply to transactions in 
  1.16  which the sole means of recording the person's credit or debit 
  1.17  card number is by handwriting or by an imprint or copy of the 
  1.18  credit or debit card. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE; APPLICATION.] 
  1.20     Section 1 is effective January 1, 2004, with respect to any 
  1.21  receipt printed using a cash register or other machine or device 
  1.22  that is first put into use on or after July 1, 2003. 
  1.23     Section 1 is effective July 1, 2006, with respect to any 
  1.24  receipt printed using a cash register or other machine or device 
  1.25  that is in use before July 1, 2003.
