  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing student instruction 
  1.3             in personal financial management and investment; 
  1.4             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.5             chapter 120B. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [120B.26] [PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND 
  1.8   INVESTMENT EDUCATION.] 
  1.9      School districts shall establish grade-level instruction to 
  1.10  assure that all students are provided the opportunity to obtain 
  1.11  sufficient knowledge and skill to enable each student to take 
  1.12  individual responsibility for personal financial well-being.  
  1.13  Students should understand basic economic and consumer 
  1.14  principles, be able to manage personal and household finances, 
  1.15  and develop a range of competencies that will enable them to 
  1.16  become responsible investors, savers, and consumers in a free 
  1.17  enterprise economy. 
  1.18     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective for the 
  1.19  2003-2004 school year and later.
