  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to transportation; appropriating money for 
  1.3             the midwest regional rail initiative; requiring 
  1.4             preliminary engineering and environmental analysis 
  1.5             activities. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [MIDWEST REGIONAL RAIL INITIATIVE; 
  1.8   APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.9      $11,500,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.10  commissioner of transportation to complete the preliminary 
  1.11  engineering and environmental analysis activities for the 
  1.12  130-mile section of the midwest regional rail corridor in 
  1.13  Minnesota.  The work tasks must include, but are not limited to: 
  1.14  a corridor condition assessment; station development and 
  1.15  location; communications and signal systems evaluation; safety 
  1.16  and traffic analysis; drainage and hydraulics analysis; analysis 
  1.17  of land use and development issues; noise, water, and air 
  1.18  quality analysis; impacts on historic and archaeological sites; 
  1.19  and other potential impacts. 
  1.20     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.21     Section 1 is effective July 1, 2001.
