  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to insurance; health; requiring plans issued 
  1.3             to supplement Medicare to provide coverage for 
  1.4             equipment and supplies for the management and 
  1.5             treatment of diabetes; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.6             1994, section 62A.45. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 62A.45, is 
  1.9   amended to read: 
  1.10     62A.45 [COVERAGE FOR EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES FOR DIABETES.] 
  1.11     A health plan, including a plan providing the coverage 
  1.12  specified in section 62A.011, subdivision 3, clause (10), must 
  1.13  provide coverage for all physician prescribed medically 
  1.14  appropriate and necessary equipment and supplies used in the 
  1.15  management and treatment of diabetes.  Coverage must include 
  1.16  persons with gestational, type I or type II diabetes.  Coverage 
  1.17  required under this section is subject to the same deductible or 
  1.18  coinsurance provisions applicable to the plan's hospital, 
  1.19  medical expense, medical equipment, or prescription drug 
  1.20  benefits.  A health carrier may not reduce or eliminate coverage 
  1.21  due to this requirement. 
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE; APPLICABILITY.] 
  1.23     Section 1 is effective January 1, 1996, and applies to a 
  1.24  plan providing the coverage specified in section 62A.011, 
  1.25  subdivision 3, clause (10), issued or renewed on or after that 
  1.26  date to provide coverage to Minnesota residents.
