  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to drivers' licenses; allowing for driver's 
  1.3             license and state identification card to bear firearms 
  1.4             safety designation; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, 
  1.5             section 171.07, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 171.07, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 12.  [FIREARMS SAFETY DESIGNATION.] (a) When an 
  1.10  applicant presents a firearms safety certificate issued for 
  1.11  successfully completing a firearms safety course administered 
  1.12  under section 97B.015, voluntarily requests a driver's license 
  1.13  or identification card described in paragraph (b), pays the 
  1.14  required fees, and otherwise qualifies, the department shall 
  1.15  issue, renew, or reissue to the applicant a driver's license or 
  1.16  Minnesota identification card described in paragraph (b). 
  1.17     (b) Pursuant to paragraph (a), the department shall issue a 
  1.18  driver's license or Minnesota identification card bearing a 
  1.19  designation or symbolic representation, as designed by the 
  1.20  commissioner in consultation with the commissioner of natural 
  1.21  resources, indicating that the applicant has successfully 
  1.22  completed a firearms safety course and is knowledgeable in 
  1.23  firearms safety.
