  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; allowing independent school 
  1.3             district No. 709, Duluth, to reduce the number of 
  1.4             atlarge school board members.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [ATLARGE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS; INDEPENDENT 
  1.7   SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 709, DULUTH.] 
  1.8      (a) Notwithstanding Laws 1969, chapter 698, or other law to 
  1.9   the contrary, the school board for independent school district 
  1.10  No. 709, Duluth, may by resolution reduce from five to three the 
  1.11  number of atlarge school board members. 
  1.12     (b) If the school board adopts the resolution under 
  1.13  paragraph (a), for the November 2003 election and each four 
  1.14  years thereafter, the three positions of those members elected 
  1.15  atlarge whose terms expire on December 31, 2003, shall be 
  1.16  reduced to one member elected atlarge. 
  1.17     (c) Nothing in this section prevents a member of the school 
  1.18  board on the effective date of this act who is otherwise 
  1.19  qualified from running for reelection upon the expiration of 
  1.20  that member's term. 
  1.21     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective the day 
  1.22  following final enactment.
