A bill for an act
relating to education finance; establishing a school hot lunch grant program for
students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch; requiring a report;
appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

new text begin The sums indicated in this section are
appropriated from the general fund to the Department of Education for the fiscal years
designated.

new text begin School hot lunch grant program. new text end

new text begin (a) For grants to school sites to assist in
paying for regular school hot lunches for students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price
lunches but who have extenuating financial circumstances:

new text begin (b) The commissioner of education shall develop the form and method for applying for
grants under this subdivision. The commissioner shall develop criteria for determining the
allocation of the grants, including the amount of each grant and defining what extenuating
financial circumstances qualify a student to receive assistance.

new text begin (c) Annually by June 30, the commissioner of education must report to the chairs and
ranking minority members of the legislative committees having jurisdiction over kindergarten
through grade 12 education the number of school sites that received grants under this section,
the number of students served, and the number of meals purchased using grant funds during
the last school year.
