A bill for an act
relating to education; amending the notice process to students and parents of the
right to opt out of having the student's contact information shared with military
recruiters; amending Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 13.32, subdivision 5a.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 13.32, subdivision 5a, is amended to read:


Subd. 5a.

Military recruitment.

11 and 12 within 60 days after the date of the request, except as otherwise provided by this

Data released to military recruiting officers under this subdivision:

(1) may be used only for the purpose of providing information to students about military
service, state and federal veterans' education benefits, and other career and educational
opportunities provided by the military; and

(2) shall not be further disseminated to any other person except personnel of the recruiting
services of the armed forces.

new text begin (b) The notice required by paragraph (a) shall:

new text begin (1) be clear, conspicuous, and in the same format and size type as other statements on
the card or form requesting emergency contact information that is distributed by the
secondary institution to each student or parent or guardian of the student; and

new text begin (2) inform and request the student or parent or guardian of the student to indicate if the
student's name, address, and telephone numbers should not be released to military recruiting
officers by clearly checking the box entitled "Do Not Release Contact Information."
