A bill for an act
relating to public health; requiring information on meningococcal and human
papillomavirus vaccines and vaccines for other diseases to be provided;
proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 144.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin [144.3353] INFORMATION ON PRETEEN IMMUNIZATIONS.

new text begin (a) The commissioner of health shall make available to every public and private
school in the state that enrolls students in grades 6 to 12 information about meningococcal
disease and its vaccines, human papillomavirus and its vaccine, and other diseases for
which preteens may be vaccinated. This information must be provided to parents or
guardians of sixth grade students at the beginning of the school year.

new text begin (b) The information about meningococcal disease must include:

new text begin (1) its causes and symptoms, how meningococcal disease is spread, and where
parents or guardians can obtain additional information on the disease and on its vaccine;
and

new text begin (2) current recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention regarding the vaccine for meningococcal disease and where the vaccination
can be received.

new text begin (c) The information about human papillomavirus disease must include:
new text end

new text begin (1) its causes and symptoms, how human papillomavirus disease is spread, and
where parents or guardians may obtain additional information on the disease and on
its vaccine; and

new text begin (2) current recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention regarding the vaccine for human papillomavirus disease and where the
vaccination can be received.

new text begin (d) The Department of Health, in consultation with the Department of Education,
shall prepare the informational materials required in this section.

new text begin (e) Nothing in this section shall be construed to require students to receive a
meningococcal vaccination or a human papillomavirus vaccination to remain enrolled in
school or require the school to provide the vaccinations to students.
