  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; public employees retirement 
  1.3             association; authorizing the purchase of allowable 
  1.4             service credit by certain Bemidji elected officials. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [PUBLIC EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION; 
  1.7   BEMIDJI ELECTED OFFICIAL SERVICE CREDIT PURCHASE.] 
  1.8      (a) An eligible public official described in paragraph (b) 
  1.9   may purchase allowable service credit in the general employees 
  1.10  retirement plan of the public employees retirement association 
  1.11  for all or a portion of the person's service as an elected 
  1.12  official in the city of Bemidji that has not previously been 
  1.13  credited by that retirement plan. 
  1.14     (b) An eligible public official is a person who: 
  1.15     (1) is currently a member of the general employees 
  1.16  retirement plan of the public employees retirement association; 
  1.17     (2) was born on February 5, 1939; 
  1.18     (3) currently serves as the mayor of the city of Bemidji; 
  1.19  and 
  1.20     (4) was first elected to public office as a Bemidji city 
  1.21  council member in November 1968. 
  1.22     (c) The service credit purchase payment amount 
  1.23  determination and procedure are governed by Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.24  section 356.55. 
  1.25     (d) The eligible public official shall provide the 
  2.1   executive director of the public employees retirement 
  2.2   association with adequate documentation of the applicability of 
  2.3   paragraph (b) and any other relevant information that the 
  2.4   executive director requests. 
  2.5      (e) Authority to purchase service credit under this section 
  2.6   expires on July 1, 2001. 
  2.7      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.8      Section 1 is effective on the day following final enactment.
