1.2relating to veterans; authorizing commissioner of public safety to dispose
1.3of unused special veterans' license plates;proposing coding for new law in
1.4Minnesota Statutes, chapter 168.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. [168.1234] DISPOSING OF UNUSED VETERANS LICENSE PLATES.
1.7    Subdivision 1. Definitions. For purposes of this section, the following terms have
1.8the meanings given them:
1.9(a) "Unused veteran's license plate type" means any type of special veteran's license
1.10plate authorized under section 168.123, subdivision 2, paragraphs (a) to (d) and (f) to (i),
1.11for which the commissioner of veterans affairs has determined that the eligible population
1.12of veterans has ceased to exist within Minnesota, and for which the commissioner of
1.13public safety has determined that there are no registered vehicles bearing such plates
1.14within the state.
1.15(b) "Veteran" has the meaning assigned in section 197.447.
1.16    Subd. 2. Authority to dispose of unused plates. (a) Notwithstanding any other
1.17provision of this chapter, the commissioner of public safety is authorized to discontinue the
1.18sale of any unused special veteran's license plate type. Remaining stock of discontinued
1.19special veterans' plates must be transferred to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The
1.20Department of Veterans Affairs must collaborate with charitable veteran organizations to
1.21auction the plates.
1.22(b) Before selling plates of any unused special veteran's license plate type, the
1.23commissioner must declare and publicly announce that plates of that type are no longer
1.24valid for purposes of motor vehicle registration within the state.
2.1    Subd. 3. Proceeds. Proceeds from the sale of unused veterans' special license plates
2.2under this section must be provided to charitable veteran organizations.
2.3EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective July 1, 2008.
