  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to pawnbrokers; requiring pawnbrokers who 
  1.3             provide law enforcement agencies with electronic 
  1.4             records of transactions to use a specified interchange 
  1.5             file specification format; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.6             1998, section 325J.05. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 325J.05, is 
  1.9   amended to read: 
  1.10     325J.05 [RECORDS; RETENTION.] 
  1.11     (a) The pledgor or seller shall sign a pawn ticket and 
  1.12  receive an exact copy of the pawn ticket. 
  1.13     (b) The pawnbroker shall maintain on the premises a record 
  1.14  of all transactions of pledged or purchased goods for a period 
  1.15  of three years.  These records shall be a correct copy of the 
  1.16  entries made of the pawn transactions.  A pawnbroker shall upon 
  1.17  request provide to the appropriate law enforcement agency a 
  1.18  complete and accurate record of pawn items transactions.  If the 
  1.19  pawnbroker provides the records in a computerized format, they 
  1.20  must be provided in the interchange file specification format. 
  1.21     For purposes of this paragraph, "interchange file 
  1.22  specification format" means the most current version of the 
  1.23  Minneapolis automated pawn system interchange file specification 
  1.24  format. 
  1.25     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.26     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
