A bill for an act
relating to education; requiring school board policy on student deaths; proposing
coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 123B.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin [123B.301] BOARD POLICY ON DECEASED STUDENTS.

new text begin (a) A local school board or charter school board of directors must adopt a policy that
provides how the school district or charter school will respond to the death of an enrolled
student. The policy must address:

new text begin (1) district communications with students, parents and guardians, teachers, and staff
regarding notice of a student death;
new text end

new text begin (2) the availability of grief counseling for students;
new text end

new text begin (3) remembrances during a graduation ceremony or other school event; and
new text end

new text begin (4) physical memorials, including benches and trees.

new text begin (b) A local school board or charter school board of directors may consult with the
department's School Safety Technical Assistance Council when developing the policy
required under this section.
