  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; modifying the requirements for 
  1.3             membership on the board of teaching; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 125.183, subdivision 
  1.5             3. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 125.183, 
  1.8   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [MEMBERSHIP.] Except for the representatives of 
  1.10  higher education and the public, to be eligible for appointment 
  1.11  to the board of teaching a person must be a teacher currently 
  1.12  teaching in a Minnesota public school and fully licensed for the 
  1.13  position held and have at least five years teaching experience 
  1.14  in Minnesota, including the two years immediately preceding 
  1.15  nomination and appointment.  Each nominee, other than a public 
  1.16  nominee, must be selected on the basis of professional 
  1.17  experience and knowledge of teacher education, accreditation, 
  1.18  and licensure.  The board must be composed of: 
  1.19     (1) six classroom teachers who are currently teaching in a 
  1.20  Minnesota public school; 
  1.21     (2) one higher education representative, who must be a 
  1.22  faculty member preparing teachers; 
  1.23     (3) one school administrator; and 
  1.24     (4) three members of the public, two of whom must be 
  1.25  present or former members of school boards.
