  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; redefining middle school to 
  1.3             include a minimum of two grades instead of three 
  1.4             grades; amending Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 
  1.5             120A.05, subdivision 11. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 120A.05, 
  1.8   subdivision 11, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 11.  [MIDDLE SCHOOL.] "Middle school" means any 
  1.10  school other than a secondary school giving an approved course 
  1.11  of study in a minimum of three two consecutive grades above 4th 
  1.12  but below 10th with building, equipment, courses of study, class 
  1.13  schedules, enrollment, and staff meeting the standards 
  1.14  established by the commissioner of children, families, and 
  1.15  learning. 
  1.16     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective for the 
  1.17  2003-2004 school year and later.
