1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to crime prevention; providing criminal 1.3 penalties for persons who threaten to harm a school 1.4 official; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 1.5 609.713, by adding a subdivision. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.713, is 1.8 amended by adding a subdivision to read: 1.9 Subd. 4. [THREATS TO HARM SCHOOL OFFICIAL.] Whoever 1.10 directly threatens to inflict bodily harm on a school official, 1.11 because the victim is a school official and with purpose to 1.12 terrorize the official or in reckless disregard of the risk of 1.13 causing such terror, is guilty of a misdemeanor. As used in 1.14 this subdivision, "school official" includes teachers, school 1.15 administrators, and other employees of a public or private 1.16 school. Whoever violates this subdivision a second or 1.17 subsequent time is guilty of a gross misdemeanor. 1.18 Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 1.19 Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to 1.20 offenses committed on or after that date.
