A bill for an act
relating to public safety; expanding identity theft crime to include using
another's identity to obtain employment; providing a criminal penalty; amending
Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 609.527, by adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 609.527, is amended by adding a
subdivision to read:

new text begin Identity theft to obtain employment crime. new text end

new text begin A person who transfers,
possesses, or uses an identity that is not the person's own, with the intent to obtain or assist
another in obtaining employment, is guilty of a crime and, unless a greater penalty is
provided in subdivision 3, may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than five years
or to payment of a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.
