  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to human services; requiring notification for 
  1.3             identification of a deceased person; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 144.05, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision; Minnesota Statutes 2001 Supplement, 
  1.6             section 149A.90, subdivision 1. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 144.05, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 4.  [IDENTIFICATION OF DECEASED INDIVIDUALS.] Upon 
  1.11  receiving notice under section 149A.90, subdivision 1, of the 
  1.12  death of an individual who cannot be identified, the 
  1.13  commissioner must post on the department's Web site information 
  1.14  regarding the individual for purposes of obtaining information 
  1.15  that may aid in identifying the individual and for purposes of 
  1.16  notifying relatives who may be seeking the individual.  The 
  1.17  information must remain on the Web site continuously until the 
  1.18  person's identity is determined. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 2001 Supplement, section 
  1.20  149A.90, subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.21     Subdivision 1.  [DEATH RECORD.] (a) Except as provided in 
  1.22  this section, a death record must be completed and filed for 
  1.23  every known death by the mortician, funeral director, or other 
  1.24  person lawfully in charge of the disposition of the body. 
  1.25     (b) If the body is that of an individual whose identity is 
  1.26  unknown, the person in charge of the disposition of the body 
  2.1   must notify the commissioner for purposes of compliance with 
  2.2   section 144.05, subdivision 4.
