  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to highways; restricting size of bridges 
  1.3             built over wild and scenic rivers; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 1994, section 165.02. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 165.02, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      165.02 [POWERS OF ROAD AUTHORITIES, EXCEPTION.] 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [GENERALLY.] The road authorities may 
  1.10  construct, reconstruct, improve, and maintain bridges whenever 
  1.11  they deem bridges to be necessary.  Any new or reconstructed 
  1.12  bridge may have a separate lane in at least one direction, and 
  1.13  may have a lane in both directions, eight feet in width for 
  1.14  recreational use.  The same may be true for each underpass.  
  1.15     Subd. 2.  [BRIDGE OVER WILD OR SCENIC 
  1.16  RIVER.] Notwithstanding subdivision 1, any other provision of 
  1.17  this chapter, or any other law to the contrary, a bridge built 
  1.18  after the effective date of this subdivision over a river 
  1.19  designated as a wild, scenic, or recreational river and 
  1.20  protected under the Minnesota wild and scenic rivers act may not 
  1.21  contain more than two lanes for motorized vehicle traffic, with 
  1.22  the total width of both lanes no greater than 30 feet. 
  1.23     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
