  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to telecommunications; requiring public 
  1.3             utilities commission to reconsider area code 
  1.4             assignments for metropolitan area. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [METROPOLITAN AREA CODE CONSIDERATIONS.] 
  1.7      The public utilities commission shall halt any proceeding 
  1.8   or action to allow a change in telephone area codes in the 
  1.9   seven-county metropolitan area.  Before allowing such a change, 
  1.10  the commission shall base its decision for allocating new 
  1.11  telephone area codes in the metropolitan area on the following 
  1.12  factors: 
  1.13     (1) that the area code for the cities of St. Paul and 
  1.14  Minneapolis must remain as 612; and 
  1.15     (2) that communities contiguous to those cities should, if 
  1.16  feasible, retain the same area code of 612. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.18     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
