  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; requiring a study of 
  1.3             crimes committed by persons who are released on bail; 
  1.4             appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [STUDY OF CRIMES COMMITTED BY PERSONS ON BAIL.] 
  1.7      The commissioner of administration shall study crimes 
  1.8   committed by persons who are released on bail either prior to 
  1.9   trial or prior to sentencing.  The study must address the number 
  1.10  and types of crimes committed by these individuals. 
  1.11     By January 15, 1999, the commissioner shall report to the 
  1.12  chairs of the senate and house committees and divisions having 
  1.13  jurisdiction over criminal justice policy and funding on the 
  1.14  results of the study. 
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.16     $....... is appropriated to the commissioner of 
  1.17  administration from the general fund for the fiscal year ending 
  1.18  June 30, 1999, to conduct the study described in section 1.
