  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to drivers' licenses; providing a longer 
  1.3             waiting period before the issuance of a limited 
  1.4             license following DWI and certain other offenses if 
  1.5             the driver is under the age of 18 years; amending 
  1.6             Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 171.30, by adding a 
  1.7             subdivision. 
  1.8   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.9      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 171.30, is 
  1.10  amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.11     Subd. 2b.  [WAITING PERIODS FOR YOUTH UNDER 18.] If a 
  1.12  person whose driver's license was suspended or revoked for a 
  1.13  violation listed under subdivision 2 or 2a is under the age of 
  1.14  18 years at the time of that violation, the commissioner shall 
  1.15  not issue a limited license to the person for a period of time 
  1.16  twice the length of the period specified for that violation in 
  1.17  subdivision 2 or 2a, or until the person's 18th birthday, 
  1.18  whichever is longer. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.20     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1996, and applies to 
  1.21  violations committed on or after that date.
