A bill for an act
relating to public buildings; removing a requirement that a city hold a referendum
before building, equipping, or maintaining a memorial for war veterans;
amending Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 416.01.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 416.01, is amended to read:


416.01 MEMORIALS FOR WAR VETERANS.

The governing body of any city of this state, however organized, maydeleted text begin , after the
approval of a majority of the voters of such city, voting on the question at a special election
called for the purpose, or at a general election or an annual election, in the notice whereof
the proposal to do so has been submitted for approval or rejection,
deleted text end adopt an ordinance
providing for the erection, equipment, and maintenance of a building or monument or
parks in recognition of the services performed by soldiers, sailors, marines, and war
veterans of the United States. The ordinance may also provide for the supervision and
control of deleted text begin suchdeleted text end new text begin the new text end building or monument or parks after its erection. The estimated cost, as
determined by the governing body, of deleted text begin suchdeleted text end new text begin the new text end monument or parks or buildingdeleted text begin , shalldeleted text end new text begin must
new text end be stated in deleted text begin such notice and in the proposal to be voted upon; provided, thatdeleted text end new text begin the minutes of
the meeting in which the ordinance is adopted and
new text end no sum shall be expended for deleted text begin any such
purpose
deleted text end new text begin the monument, park, or building in an amount new text end more than ten percent in excess of

such approval, is authorized to
