A bill for an act
relating to education; requiring the commissioner of education to review district
and charter school curricula; requiring a report; amending Minnesota Statutes
2016, section 120B.021, by adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 120B.021, is amended by adding a subdivision
to read:

new text begin (a) The commissioner must conduct an annual review of
a representative sample of school district and charter school curricula in all subject areas
included in the statewide testing and reporting system under section 120B.30 to ensure the
curricula are aligned with statewide standards developed under this section. A school district
or charter school must provide the commissioner with information regarding its curricula
in a format determined by the commissioner. Upon request, the commissioner must provide
assistance to a school district or charter school to modify a curriculum that is not aligned
to statewide standards.

new text begin (b) The commissioner must submit a report on the findings of the annual review and
any assistance provided to a school district or charter school under this subdivision to the
chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative committees with jurisdiction over
kindergarten through grade 12 education by January 15 of each year.
