  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; further examining a year-round 
  1.3             school/extended week or day pilot program; requiring 
  1.4             an evaluation; appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [YEAR-ROUND SCHOOL/EXTENDED WEEK OR DAY PILOT 
  1.7   PROGRAM.] 
  1.8      (a) Consistent with the terms for receiving program grants 
  1.9   under Laws 1995, First Special Session chapter 3, article 7, 
  1.10  section 4, as amended by Laws 1996, chapter 412, article 7, 
  1.11  section 13, independent school district No. 241, Albert Lea, is 
  1.12  eligible to receive additional grant funding for its year-round 
  1.13  school/extended week or day pilot program. 
  1.14     (b) The commissioner of children, families, and learning 
  1.15  with the assistance of independent school district No. 241, 
  1.16  Albert Lea, shall evaluate the efficacy of the district's 
  1.17  program and submit a report to the education committees of the 
  1.18  legislature by February 1, 2001.  The commissioner shall include 
  1.19  in the report sufficient information to permit other school 
  1.20  districts to readily replicate the program if the commissioner 
  1.21  determines that the program is successful.  
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.23     $235,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.24  commissioner of children, families, and learning in fiscal year 
  1.25  1998 for independent school district No. 241, Albert Lea, for an 
  2.1   additional year-round school/extended week or day pilot program 
  2.2   grant under section 1.  The appropriation is available until 
  2.3   June 30, 2000. 
  2.4      Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.5      Sections 1 and 2 are effective the day following final 
  2.6   enactment.
