  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; authorizing an additional bus 
  1.3             purchase levy; amending Laws 1997, First Special 
  1.4             Session chapter 4, article 1, section 58. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  1.7   article 1, section 58, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Sec. 58.  [BUS PURCHASE LEVY.] 
  1.9      (a) For 1997 taxes payable in 1998, a school district may 
  1.10  levy the amount necessary to eliminate the deficit in the 
  1.11  reserved fund balance account for bus purchases in its 
  1.12  transportation fund as of June 30, 1996. 
  1.13     (b) For 1998 taxes payable in 1999, a school district that 
  1.14  had a positive balance in the reserved fund balance account for 
  1.15  bus purchases in its transportation fund as of June 30, 1996, 
  1.16  but that had already entered into a contract for new buses or 
  1.17  ordered new buses that had not been received prior to June 30, 
  1.18  1996, may levy an amount equal to the difference between the 
  1.19  purchase price of the buses and its balance in the reserve 
  1.20  account for bus purchases. 
  1.21     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.22     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
