  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to data practices; classifying data on 
  1.3             members of the criminal alert network; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 13.99, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision; Minnesota Statutes 1995 Supplement, 
  1.6             section 299A.61. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 13.99, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 89a.  [CRIMINAL ALERT NETWORK.] Data on private 
  1.11  sector members of the criminal alert network are classified 
  1.12  under section 299A.61, subdivision 2. 
  1.13     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 1995 Supplement, section 
  1.14  299A.61, is amended to read: 
  1.15     Subdivision 1.  [ESTABLISHMENT.] The commissioner of public 
  1.16  safety, in cooperation with the commissioner of administration, 
  1.17  shall develop and maintain an integrated criminal alert network 
  1.18  to facilitate the communication of crime prevention information 
  1.19  by electronic means among state agencies, law enforcement 
  1.20  officials, and the private sector.  The network shall 
  1.21  disseminate data regarding the commission of crimes, including 
  1.22  information on missing and endangered children, and attempt to 
  1.23  reduce theft and other crime by the use of electronic 
  1.24  transmission of information. 
  1.25     Subd. 2.  [DATA ON MEMBERS.] Data on private sector members 
  1.26  of the criminal alert network are private data on individuals or 
  2.1   nonpublic data, as defined in section 13.02, subdivision 12 or 9.
