  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to natural resources; designating certain 
  1.3             campsite fees in the boundary waters canoe area to 
  1.4             fund the permanent school fund; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 1996, section 84.525. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 84.525, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      84.525 [MAINTENANCE OF CAMPSITES IN THE BWCA.] 
  1.10     Subdivision 1.  [DISPOSITION OF FEES.] Except as provided 
  1.11  in subdivision 2, all reservation fees paid to the state 
  1.12  attributable to state-owned lands within the boundary waters 
  1.13  canoe area must be credited to an account in the special revenue 
  1.14  fund and are appropriated to the commissioner of natural 
  1.15  resources for maintenance of state-owned campsites within the 
  1.16  boundary waters canoe area.  The commissioner may enter into 
  1.17  cooperative agreements with the federal government for 
  1.18  maintenance of the campsites. 
  1.19     Subd. 2.  [TRUST FUND LAND.] (a) No later than June 1, 
  1.20  1999, the commissioner of natural resources shall designate 
  1.21  1,000 campsites located on school grant lands in the boundary 
  1.22  waters canoe area for lease on a daily, weekly, or monthly 
  1.23  basis, the fees from which shall be used to fund education. 
  1.24     (b) The designated campsites shall be leased with a 
  1.25  preference given to Minnesota residents on a first come, first 
  2.1   served basis.  
  2.2      (c) The commissioner may determine the lease fees.  No more 
  2.3   than ten percent of the lease fees may be retained by the 
  2.4   commissioner for administrative purposes.  The remainder of the 
  2.5   lease fees shall be deposited in the state treasury and credited 
  2.6   to the permanent school fund.
