  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; extending the flood losses 
  1.3             appropriation; amending Laws 1997, First Special 
  1.4             Session chapter 4, article 4, section 35, subdivision 
  1.5             9. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  1.8   article 4, section 35, subdivision 9, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 9.  [FLOOD LOSSES.] For grants and loans to 
  1.10  independent school district Nos. 2854, Ada-Borup; 2176, 
  1.11  Warren-Alvarado-Oslo; 846, Breckenridge; 595, East Grand Forks; 
  1.12  and other districts affected by the 1997 floods for expenses 
  1.13  associated with the floods not covered by insurance or state or 
  1.14  federal disaster relief: 
  1.15     $4,700,000     .....     1998
  1.16     The commissioner shall award grants and loans to school 
  1.17  districts to cover expenses associated with the 1997 floods.  
  1.18  The grants or loans may be for capital losses or for 
  1.19  extraordinary operating expenses resulting from the floods.  
  1.20  School districts shall repay any loan or grant amounts to the 
  1.21  department if those amounts are otherwise funded from other 
  1.22  sources.  The commissioner shall establish the terms and 
  1.23  conditions of any loans and may request any necessary 
  1.24  information from school districts before awarding a grant or 
  1.25  loan.  This appropriation shall also be used to fund aid under 
  2.1   sections 33 and 34. 
  2.2      This appropriation is available until June 30, 1999.
