  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to highways; expanding uses of money 
  1.3             appropriated for fiscal year 2001 for local bridge 
  1.4             replacement and rehabilitation; amending Laws 2000, 
  1.5             chapter 479, article 1, section 2, subdivision 11. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Laws 2000, chapter 479, article 1, section 2, 
  1.8   subdivision 11, is amended to read: 
  1.9   Subd. 11.  Local Bridge
  1.10  Replacement and Rehabilitation                       39,000,000
  1.11  To match federal money and to replace 
  1.12  or rehabilitate local deficient bridges.
  1.13  Political subdivisions may use grants 
  1.14  made under this subdivision to 
  1.15  construct or reconstruct bridges, 
  1.16  including: 
  1.17  (1) matching federal aid grants to 
  1.18  construct or reconstruct key bridges; 
  1.19  (2) paying the costs of preliminary 
  1.20  engineering and environmental studies 
  1.21  authorized under Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.22  section 174.50, subdivision 6a; 
  1.23  (3) paying the costs to abandon an 
  1.24  existing bridge that is deficient and 
  1.25  in need of replacement, but where no 
  1.26  replacement will be made; and 
  1.27  (4) paying the costs to construct a 
  1.28  road or street to facilitate the 
  1.29  abandonment of an existing bridge 
  1.30  determined by the commissioner to be 
  1.31  deficient, if the commissioner 
  1.32  determines that construction of the 
  1.33  road or street is more economical than 
  1.34  replacing the existing bridge.; 
  1.35  (5) paying the costs of flood-related 
  2.1   erosion protection; 
  2.2   (6) constructing water-retention 
  2.3   projects if the commissioner determines 
  2.4   that constructing the project is more 
  2.5   cost efficient than replacing an 
  2.6   existing bridge; and 
  2.7   (7) constructing bridges on new 
  2.8   alignments. 
  2.9      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.10     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
