A bill for an act
relating to natural resources; establishing process to rename certain water bodies;
amending Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 83A.05, subdivision 1, by adding a
subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 83A.05, subdivision 1, is amended to read:


Subdivision 1.

Applicability.

A name of a lake, river, stream, or other body of water
may be given or changed under sections 83A.05 to 83A.07new text begin .new text end Except deleted text begin thatdeleted text end new text begin as provided in

Sec. 2.

Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 83A.05, is amended by adding a subdivision to
read:

new text begin Changing name of water body that has existed for 40 years. new text end

new text begin (a) County
boards may petition the commissioner of natural resources to change the name of a lake,
river, stream, or other body of water where the name has existed for 40 years or more when:

new text begin (1) the county board adopts a resolution approving the name change; and
new text end

new text begin (2) the county board receives resolutions approving the name change from all other
applicable local units of government with jurisdiction over the lake, river, stream, or other
body of water and with jurisdiction over the land surrounding the lake, river, stream, or
other body of water. After verifying that all applicable local units of government have
submitted resolutions approving the name change, the commissioner may change the name
of the lake, river, stream, or other body of water.

change the name after receiving resolutions approving the name change from all local units
of government with jurisdiction over the lake, river, stream, or other body of water and with
jurisdiction over the land surrounding the lake, river, stream, or other body of water.

cities, organized townships, tribal governments, and special purpose governmental units.
