A bill for an act
relating to retirement; requiring payment of disability benefits to certain persons.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin DISABILITY BENEFITS.

new text begin The Public Employees Retirement Association must pay disability benefits to
a person who:
new text end

new text begin (1) terminated employment as a paramedic with the Hennepin County Medical
Center on November 30, 2004; and
new text end

new text begin (2) submits an application for disability benefits to the association which includes
medical evidence indicating that the person has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and that
symptoms of this disease were present before the person terminated employment, even
though the symptoms were not conclusively diagnosed as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
until after the person terminated employment.

Sec. 2. new text begin EFFECTIVE DATE.

new text begin Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment. Upon receiving an
application complying with section 1, the Public Employees Retirement Association must
pay disability benefits retroactively, as if the association had determined the person to be
entitled to those benefits at the time of termination of employment with the Hennepin
County Medical Center.
