A bill for an act
relating to corrections; requiring certain notifications to inmates who are
veterans; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapters 243; 641.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin Upon initial intake of an individual to a correctional facility following conviction
of a felony and sentencing for more than 60 days, the commissioner must attempt
to identify any inmates who receive service-related disability payments from the
Department of Veterans Affairs. If an inmate receives a service-related disability benefit,
the commissioner must notify the inmate of the inmate's duty to report the inmate's
incarceration to the commissioner of veterans affairs. The commissioner shall furnish VA
form 21-4138 to an inmate receiving a service-related disability benefit, and provide the
inmate with a reasonable opportunity to notify the inmate's county veteran services officer
or the commissioner of veterans affairs.

payments, the sheriff must notify the inmate of the inmate's duty to report the inmate's
incarceration to the commissioner of veterans affairs. The sheriff shall furnish VA form
