  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for instruction in 
  1.3             the proper etiquette, display, and respect of the 
  1.4             United States flag; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 
  1.5             section 121A.11, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 121A.11, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [INSTRUCTION.] Each school district shall provide 
  1.10  student instruction in the proper etiquette toward, correct 
  1.11  display of, and respect for the flag, and in patriotic 
  1.12  exercises.  The instruction must be a part of the district's 
  1.13  fifth grade social studies curriculum.  The commissioner shall 
  1.14  assist in the development of this instruction at the request of 
  1.15  a district. 
  1.16     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective the day 
  1.17  following final enactment.  Each school district must begin the 
  1.18  instruction required under this section no later than the 
  1.19  2002-2003 school year.
