  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to the state building code; permitting the 
  1.3             installation of non-hard-wired stairway chair lifts in 
  1.4             private residences in certain circumstances; amending 
  1.5             Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 16B.745, subdivision 
  1.6             3. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 16B.745, 
  1.9   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 3.  [MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.] No person, firm, or 
  1.11  corporation may construct, install, alter, remove, or repair an 
  1.12  elevator that does not meet the minimum requirements of this 
  1.13  chapter, adopted rules, or national codes adopted by rule. 
  1.14  Notwithstanding any provision of rule or national code adopted 
  1.15  by rule to the contrary, however, a stairway chair lift that is 
  1.16  not hard-wired to the building's electrical system, but is 
  1.17  instead plugged into an electrical outlet, may be installed in a 
  1.18  private residence for the use of its occupants.
