  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; appropriating money to 
  1.3             expand community block club programs and to enhance 
  1.4             neighborhood policing. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.7      $5,000,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.8   commissioner of public safety for the fiscal year ending June 
  1.9   30, 1997.  The commissioner shall use this money to award grants 
  1.10  under Minnesota Statutes, sections 299A.34 and 299A.35, for the 
  1.11  following purposes: 
  1.12     (1) to expand community block club programs; and 
  1.13     (2) to enable the state patrol and local law enforcement 
  1.14  agencies in the seven-county metropolitan area to assign 
  1.15  overtime officers to high crime areas for the purpose of 
  1.16  vigorously enforcing curfew, truancy, and traffic laws, 
  1.17  initiating street contacts, checking for outstanding warrants, 
  1.18  generating intelligence information on suspected drug dealers 
  1.19  and gang members, and arresting criminal law violators.
