  1.1                             A resolution
  1.2             memorializing the President and Congress to promptly 
  1.3             provide aid to the victims of the January 26 
  1.4             earthquake in India. 
  1.5      
  1.6      WHEREAS, it is our collective responsibility to help our 
  1.7   brothers and sisters in need; and 
  1.8      WHEREAS, the lives and hopes of hundreds of thousands in 
  1.9   Gujarat were shattered within minutes when an earthquake struck 
  1.10  on January 26; and 
  1.11     WHEREAS, the earthquake centered in the Indian state of 
  1.12  Gujarat was the strongest to hit India in 50 years and measured 
  1.13  at a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale; and 
  1.14     WHEREAS, more than 35,000 men, women, and children were 
  1.15  killed in the powerful earthquake and over 66,000 were injured, 
  1.16  making this one of the deadliest in history; and 
  1.17     WHEREAS, 600,000 people have been left homeless by the 
  1.18  earthquake; and 
  1.19     WHEREAS, in the city of Bhuj, an estimated ten percent of 
  1.20  all buildings completely collapsed and 90 percent were damaged; 
  1.21  and 
  1.22     WHEREAS, there was a loss in excess of $5.2 billion; NOW 
  1.23  THEREFORE, 
  1.24     BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota 
  1.25  that Congress should quickly enact legislation to send emergency 
  2.1   assistance to the victims of the earthquake.  
  2.2      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the 
  2.3   State of Minnesota is directed to prepare copies of this 
  2.4   memorial and transmit them to the President of the United 
  2.5   States, the President and Secretary of the Senate, the Speaker 
  2.6   and Clerk of the House of Representatives, and Minnesota's 
  2.7   Senators and Representatives in Congress.
