  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; placing college students in 
  1.3             K-12 schools through state work study; appropriating 
  1.4             money; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.5             136A.233, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 136A.233, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 4.  [COOPERATION WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS.] Each campus 
  1.10  using the state work study program is encouraged to cooperate 
  1.11  with its local public elementary and secondary schools to place 
  1.12  college work study students in activities in the schools, such 
  1.13  as tutoring, that assist students in kindergarten through grade 
  1.14  12 in meeting graduation standards.  College students shall work 
  1.15  under direct supervision; therefore, school hiring authorities 
  1.16  are not required to request criminal background checks on these 
  1.17  students under section 120.1045. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.19     $....... in fiscal year 1998 and $....... in fiscal year 
  1.20  1999 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner 
  1.21  of children, families, and learning to allocate to school 
  1.22  districts to pay the employer's share of work study students' 
  1.23  compensation, under Minnesota Statutes, section 136A.233, 
  1.24  subdivision 3.  Money shall be available to districts upon 
  1.25  request until the appropriation is exhausted.  The commissioner 
  2.1   may establish an application procedure for allocating the money 
  2.2   to districts.
