  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; appropriating money for 
  1.3             costs relating to the 1837 treaty. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [TREATY IMPLEMENTATION.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] $6,500,000 is appropriated 
  1.7   from the budget reserve in the general fund to the commissioner 
  1.8   of public safety to reimburse the department of natural 
  1.9   resources, the office of tourism, the department of public 
  1.10  safety, the department of military affairs, the department of 
  1.11  transportation, local units of government, and other state 
  1.12  agencies for costs incurred relating to the 1837 treaty.  The 
  1.13  appropriation is available until June 30, 1997. 
  1.14     Subd. 2.  [EQUIPMENT AUTHORIZATION.] The commissioner of 
  1.15  public safety shall reimburse a state agency or local unit of 
  1.16  government for costs incurred in acquiring equipment to 
  1.17  implement the 1837 treaty only if the acquisition has been 
  1.18  preapproved by the commissioners of public safety and natural 
  1.19  resources. 
  1.20     Subd. 3.  [COMMISSIONER'S AUTHORITY.] The commissioner of 
  1.21  public safety may request that local units of government assign 
  1.22  peace officers to assist the department of public safety with 
  1.23  its duties relating to the 1837 treaty and may make appropriate 
  1.24  arrangements to pay their compensation.  The commissioner may 
  2.1   also employ off-duty peace officers to implement the 1837 treaty.
  2.2      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.3      Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
