  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to traffic regulations; prescribing the 
  1.3             display period for "Walk" and "Don't Walk" signals at 
  1.4             intersections with pedestrian-control traffic signals; 
  1.5             amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 169.06, 
  1.6             subdivision 6. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 169.06, 
  1.9   subdivision 6, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 6.  [PEDESTRIAN CONTROL SIGNAL.] Whenever special 
  1.11  pedestrian-control signals exhibiting the words "Walk" or "Don't 
  1.12  Walk" are in place such signals shall indicate as follows: 
  1.13     (a) "Walk", flashing or steady.  Pedestrians facing such 
  1.14  signals may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the 
  1.15  signal and must be given the right-of-way by drivers of all 
  1.16  vehicles.  A "Walk" signal must display for at least a period 
  1.17  sufficient to allow a pedestrian walking at a speed of three 
  1.18  feet per second to cross the street from the curb to the middle 
  1.19  of the farthest lane. 
  1.20     (b) "Don't Walk", flashing or steady.  No pedestrian shall 
  1.21  start to cross the roadway in the direction of such signals, but 
  1.22  any pedestrian who has partially crossed on the "Walk" signal 
  1.23  shall proceed to a sidewalk or safety island while the "Don't 
  1.24  Walk" signal is showing.  A flashing "Don't Walk" signal must 
  1.25  display for at least a period sufficient to allow a pedestrian 
  1.26  walking at a speed of three feet per second to cross the street 
  2.1   from the curb to the middle of the farthest lane.  
  2.2      (c) A pedestrian crossing a roadway in conformity with this 
  2.3   section is lawfully within the intersection and, when in a 
  2.4   crosswalk, is lawfully within the crosswalk.
