  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; teachers retirement 
  1.3             association; authorizing the purchase of certain 
  1.4             unrequested leave periods. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [TEACHERS RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION; PURCHASE OF 
  1.7   UNREQUESTED LEAVE PERIOD.] 
  1.8      (a) A qualified teacher described in paragraph (b) is 
  1.9   entitled to purchase service credit from the teachers retirement 
  1.10  association for the period of unrequested leave from teaching 
  1.11  service specified in paragraph (b), clause (5), upon the payment 
  1.12  of the purchase price specified in paragraph (c). 
  1.13     (b) A qualified teacher is a person who: 
  1.14     (1) was born in 1943; 
  1.15     (2) is a current member of the teachers retirement 
  1.16  association; 
  1.17     (3) initially was employed as a teacher in 1966 by the 
  1.18  Alexandria school district; 
  1.19     (4) was subsequently employed as an industrial arts teacher 
  1.20  at the Virginia high school by the Virginia school district; and 
  1.21     (5) was placed on unrequested leave by the Virginia school 
  1.22  district for the 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 school years. 
  1.23     (c) The purchase payment amount must be determined as 
  1.24  provided in Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55. 
  1.25     (d) Payment of the prior service credit purchase amount 
  2.1   must be made by January 1, 2000. 
  2.2      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.3      Section 1 is effective on the day following final enactment.
