  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; directing the board of 
  1.3             peace officer standards and training to amend its 
  1.4             rules and to establish an award for excellence in 
  1.5             peace officer training. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [AMENDMENT TO RULES REQUIRED.] 
  1.8      The board of peace officer standards and training shall 
  1.9   amend its rules to require that part-time peace officers be 
  1.10  United States citizens and possess a valid Minnesota driver's 
  1.11  license. 
  1.12     Sec. 2.  [AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PEACE OFFICER TRAINING.] 
  1.13     The board of peace officer standards and training shall 
  1.14  establish an award for excellence in peace officer training to 
  1.15  encourage innovation, quality, and effectiveness, and to 
  1.16  recognize achievement in the area of peace officer training.  
  1.17  The board may annually make awards in the categories of 
  1.18  individual achievement, lifetime achievement, and organizational 
  1.19  achievement.  The board shall establish standards regarding 
  1.20  award eligibility and application, evaluation, and selection 
  1.21  procedures.
