  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to highways; requiring sign notifying 
  1.3             motorist when highway pavement ends; proposing coding 
  1.4             for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 160. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [160.098] [SIGN WHERE PAVEMENT ENDS.] 
  1.7      Subdivision 1.  [SIGN REQUIRED.] Notwithstanding section 
  1.8   160.01, subdivision 2, each road authority shall erect and 
  1.9   maintain a "pavement ends" sign where a paved, public road or 
  1.10  highway changes to a gravel, dirt, or otherwise unimproved, 
  1.11  public road or highway.  Notwithstanding section 169.06, 
  1.12  subdivision 3, the road authority with jurisdiction over the 
  1.13  road or highway shall install and maintain the "pavement ends" 
  1.14  sign according to the commissioner's manual of uniform 
  1.15  traffic-control devices authorized by section 169.06, 
  1.16  subdivision 1.  
  1.17     Subd. 2.  [LIABILITY.] When a road or highway has been 
  1.18  signed in compliance with subdivision 1, the road authority with 
  1.19  jurisdiction and its officers and employees are exempt from 
  1.20  liability for any negligence or tort claim for injury to person 
  1.21  or property arising from travel from a paved road or highway to 
  1.22  an unimproved road or highway and related to its maintenance or 
  1.23  condition.  
  1.24     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.25     Section 1 is effective May 1, 2000.
