  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for a wide area 
  1.3             transportation service pilot project; appropriating 
  1.4             money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [WIDE AREA TRANSPORTATION SERVICE PILOT 
  1.7   PROJECT.] 
  1.8      $250,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal 
  1.9   year 1996 to the department of education for a wide area 
  1.10  transportation service pilot project.  The purpose of the 
  1.11  project is to determine the feasibility of establishing a 
  1.12  mechanism through the use of computerized mapping and scheduling 
  1.13  programs for school districts to jointly provide transportation 
  1.14  services for low-incidence programs in the metropolitan area.  
  1.15  These services include, but are not limited to, transportation 
  1.16  for special education, nonpublic pupils, chartered schools, 
  1.17  enrollment options programs, area learning center programs and 
  1.18  desegregation programs.  The department shall establish an 
  1.19  advisory task force that includes representatives of the 
  1.20  affected programs, transportation managers from both 
  1.21  metropolitan and rural districts, and the metropolitan council.  
  1.22  The department shall contract for services as appropriate.  The 
  1.23  project may consider the relationship of education 
  1.24  transportation with transportation services provided by 
  1.25  noneducation agencies.  Up to $25,000 of the appropriation is 
  2.1   available for evaluation by an independent party.  The 
  2.2   department must report to the education committees of the 
  2.3   legislature by March 15, 1996, on the progress of the project.  
  2.4   This appropriation is available until June 30, 1997.
