  1.1                             A resolution
  1.2             urging the United States Postal Service to create a 
  1.3             postage stamp reproducing Eric Enstrom's photograph 
  1.4             "Grace." 
  1.5      
  1.6      WHEREAS, in 1918, the photographer Eric Enstrom was working 
  1.7   from a studio in Bovey, Minnesota; and 
  1.8      WHEREAS, his attention was drawn to Charles Wilden, a poor 
  1.9   shoe-scraper salesman whose gentle face gave Enstrom an idea for 
  1.10  a picture; and 
  1.11     WHEREAS, Enstrom posed Wilden with a few simple objects and 
  1.12  with bowed head and folded hands, to represent an attitude of 
  1.13  humble thankfulness, and named his picture "Grace"; and 
  1.14     WHEREAS, the photograph's popularity grew, first as a black 
  1.15  and white or sepia tone print, later as a hand-colored print, 
  1.16  until at last Enstrom could not keep up with the demand and sold 
  1.17  the copyright to Augsburg Publishing House in 1945; and 
  1.18     WHEREAS, the picture is now in the public domain; and 
  1.19     WHEREAS, "Grace" is known worldwide and is one of the 
  1.20  country's best-loved religious images; and 
  1.21     WHEREAS, a group of citizens in Grand Rapids and Bovey, 
  1.22  Minnesota, have sought the support of the public and the 
  1.23  legislature in their drive to petition the United States Postal 
  1.24  Service Selection Committee to adopt "Grace" for reproduction as 
  1.25  a United States postage stamp; NOW, THEREFORE, 
  2.1      BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota 
  2.2   that it strongly urges the Selection Committee of the United 
  2.3   States Postal Service to create a postage stamp reproducing Eric 
  2.4   Enstrom's photograph "Grace." 
  2.5      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the 
  2.6   State of Minnesota is directed to prepare copies of this 
  2.7   memorial and transmit them to the United States Postal Service 
  2.8   Selection Committee, the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee of 
  2.9   the United States Postal Service, and Minnesota's Senators and 
  2.10  Representatives in Congress.
