  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to drivers' licenses; requiring department of 
  1.3             public safety to forward information about certain 
  1.4             driver's license and identification card applicants to 
  1.5             selective service system; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.6             2002, section 171.06, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 171.06, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 6.  [COMPLIANCE WITH SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM 
  1.11  REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS.] (a) By applying for an original, 
  1.12  duplicate, or renewal instruction permit, provisional driver's 
  1.13  license, driver's license, commercial driver's license, or state 
  1.14  identification card, an applicant under the age of 26, who is a 
  1.15  United States citizen or resident, consents to registration in 
  1.16  compliance with the requirements of the Military Selective 
  1.17  Service Act, United States Code, title 50, appendix, section 
  1.18  453.  The application form must state that submission of the 
  1.19  application constitutes consent to registration with the 
  1.20  selective service system, if required by federal law. 
  1.21     (b) The commissioner shall forward to the selective service 
  1.22  system in an electronic format the necessary personal 
  1.23  information required for registration of an applicant described 
  1.24  in paragraph (a).  If the applicant is under the age of 18, and 
  1.25  the license or card to be issued will expire after the 
  1.26  applicant's 18th birthday, then the commissioner shall forward 
  2.1   the necessary information to the selective service system when 
  2.2   the applicant reaches the age of 18.
