Current Version - as introduced

1.1A resolution
1.2memorializing the President and Congress to reduce the amount of proposed debt
1.3in the federal stimulus package.
1.4WHEREAS, the federal stimulus package as passed force-feeds more consumer spending
1.5and debt into an economy already suffering from an excess of both; and
1.6WHEREAS, the package tests the limits of global markets' ability to absorb United States
1.7government debt by piling an $800 billion debt on top of more than $1 trillion in new obligations
1.8already scheduled this year; and
1.9WHEREAS, the massive amount of government spending in the bill as passed will crowd
1.10out private investment, which is critical to job creation; and
1.11WHEREAS, the stimulus package includes spending that does little to create jobs; and
1.12WHEREAS, the citizens of Minnesota believe in individual liberty and therefore also in
1.13personal responsibility; and
1.14WHEREAS, to saddle Minnesotans' children and grandchildren with a crushing debt
1.15because their legislators were too timid to do the right thing would be a dismal legacy, one in
1.16which Minnesota's elected representatives should refuse to participate; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.17BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it urges the President
1.18and the Congress of the United States to reduce the amount proposed to be borrowed under
1.19the terms of the federal stimulus package by the amount that would be allotted to the State of
1.20Minnesota.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that such a reduction will enable Minnesotans to preserve
2.2their pride, honor, and dignity.
2.3BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is
2.4directed to prepare copies of this memorial and transmit them to the President of the United States,
2.5the President and the Secretary of the United States Senate, the Speaker and the Clerk of the United
2.6States House of Representatives, and Minnesota's Senators and Representatives in Congress.
