  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; appropriating money for 
  1.3             technology improvements at the Minnesota state 
  1.4             academies. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATIONS.] 
  1.7      Subdivision 1.  [DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND 
  1.8   LEARNING.] The sums indicated in this section are appropriated 
  1.9   from the general fund to the department of children, families, 
  1.10  and learning for the fiscal years designated. 
  1.11     Subd. 2.  [TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT; RESIDENTIAL 
  1.12  ACADEMIES.] For technology improvements at the Minnesota state 
  1.13  academies: 
  1.14       $  750,000     .....     1998 
  1.15       $  600,000     .....     1999 
  1.16     Of these amounts, up to $1,000,000 may be used for 
  1.17  implementing the Minnesota state academies' technology plan 
  1.18  including completion of a local area network; installation of 
  1.19  ten technology laboratories, classroom workstations, and 
  1.20  additional hardware and software; purchases of large screen 
  1.21  monitors, speech synthesizers, screen reader software, and 
  1.22  braille display; and technology support and maintenance to 
  1.23  assist the academies in fulfilling their educational mission. 
  1.24     Of these amounts, up to $200,000 may be used to provide 
  1.25  staff training and staff development in the use of technology, 
  2.1   implementation of the graduation standards, and other staff 
  2.2   development needs. 
  2.3      Of these amounts up to $150,000 may be used to upgrade the 
  2.4   textbooks and educational materials used by students. 
  2.5      Any amount remaining after the first year does not cancel 
  2.6   but is available in the second year.
